Remuera Library is a 15 minute stroll from Rawhiti Estate, and provides a rich resource of information, events and assistance – as well as books – for the local community.
Remuera Library is a place that invites people to talk, share ideas, and learn new skills – as well as providing access to a collection of 55,000 books and other resources.
Remuera Library Manager Sue Jackson says its purpose is to serve the community, and every month it hosts events that bring together people with interests in common.
“It is a busy place, and that’s exactly how we want it. Our events calendar includes hosting book clubs every second Tuesday, a monthly ukulele group, a guest speaker series, and the Flying Needles group of knitting and handcrafts enthusiasts who meet every second Thursday to chat and share their knowledge.
“It’s a place for people who love reading – and just as importantly it’s a place for a good conversation.”
Every month the Library receives new books ordered by the Central Collections team. In addition, a request system provides access to all of Auckland Libraries’ collections.
It also has an extensive range of magazines, e-books, audio books and DVDs.
Despite recent technology changes, Sue says books continue to be the main resource that people borrow.
“DVDs are also popular, and our collection is continually refreshed. We offer general DVDs at a charge of $3 for two weeks. Longer series cost $6 for four weeks, and documentaries are free for four weeks.
“We have a lot of e-books. Some people really like them, especially if they have a device on which they can enlarge the font or increase the back lighting on the page.”
Library visitors are encouraged to ask for help if they can’t find what they are looking for or want to inquire about the range of services available.
“For those who are having trouble using a device like a tablet or iPad, our team can provide solutions. It might be a simple five minute fix – or we can set up one-on-one tutorials to enable people to make the best use of programmes, apps and search functions.”
Membership of Remuera Library is free, and joining is simple. All you have to provide is some identification, and proof of your address such as a letter or invoice.
Remuera Library is open every day of the week from 9am, apart from Sunday when it opens at midday. There is ramped access at the St. Vincent Avenue entrance. Mobility parking is available and close to the ramp.
